Dragon Speed Sculpt Timelapse

So here's my first timelapse of a Zbrush sculpt.. Unfortunately it's not a single complete video as I had to come back to the model. It's just over 8 minutes long so you might want to skip through bits but this is a general idea of my work process from a sphere to a character.

This was mainly a test to see how the timelapse recording feature works on Zbrush.. My settings need some tweaks, its a bit fast in some areas and some pauses are too long but overall I'm happy that its possible to create things like this! Great for tutorials!

The point where it changes colour is a new retopologised mesh. It's going to be implemented in to a game engine So the final mesh had to be around 6000 tris!

Thanks for looking feel free to comment/share and let me know what you think!

Steve Buscemi Head Bust

Ok so its been a while.. I have been busy though! Busy creating content for my new and improved website! Which will hopefully be launched at the end of the week! It'll have a section embedded where you can view my blog! Thanks to my buddy Neil Brinsdon for all the great work he's put in to developing the site!
Anyway's the guys over at pixologic have also been busy developing new goodies for us zbrushers to play around with! The latest tool to mess around with is the fibremesh tool, which is essentially a tool for making hair/fur and also really good for repeating a lot of one thing over a body of mesh (like leaves for a tree).

So here's the latest on the Steve Buscemi head.. I've messed around with some poly painting and gave him a bad haircut.. It's quite hard to get things looking right atm but I'll get there!

Look out for the launch of my website! There'll be a showreel to see some of the animations I've been working on as well full turntables of some of the models you've seen on here! Have fun looking and thanks as always for your time!

Boardwalk Empire.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! First post of 2012 Hopefully this year will be full of content to show!

I finished watching Boardwalk Empire season 2 yesterday amazing finale! But this blog isn't about T.V shows so I'm not going to get into it! I did however notice a shot in the scene between Nucky and Jimmy that I wanted to re-create!

You're going to have to forgive the bad picture quality iphone+bad light+tv screen.. But that's the shot! I've been meaning to make a realistic attempt at a human for a while as a lot of my work is quite stylised.

So my first attempt is Steve Buscemi, a.k.a Nucky Thompson! Reference pictures are not the greatest but all I could find with the power of google.

I've started in zbrush again from a sphere.. Worked on it for roughly around 5-6 hours.

Here he is.. Without hair.. Or eye details.. I'm finding this one quite a challenge.. It's hard to get the likeliness exact but I want to get as close as I can!

Hopefully I'll end up making the entire scene and have a flythrough so we can see it from multiple angles..

Thanks for looking!

Weasel The Bounty Hunter

Today is a quick post just to show a snippet of what may turn in to a full character but will most likely stay as a quick bust sculpt.. I'm thinking about doing a series of quick sculpts with a 'Bounty Hunter' theme. The sculpts will hopefully get a bit more complex as they go! I'm going to throw this one in there for a start.

This was a sketch I did last night.. I was originally thinking of making a fish man of some sort.. But my sculpt evolved as I was making it.

This is my final render.. I like how it turned out, his character is a ratty scoundrel who's more of a minion then a boss type. The kind of guy to shoot his partner in the back to get what he wants.

I want to add a jacket and maybe a gun to this but I think this is going to be my stand off point.

More to come soon! Thanks for looking!

Alien Sculpting Done!

So I've finally got around to finishing the sculpt on this thing! Took me a while finding the time to complete it but now all that's left are the textures!

Going to go with some SSS skin tone shader's for the body and from some of the video's I've watched on Zbrush central I'm going to give the seat that he's sitting in some real nice materials!

Hopefully I'll get enough time to add a little environment.. I have an idea about what to put him in... It's going to be a spaceship but a gritty one! But that'll be after the textures for now that's my priority!

Thanks for taking the time to check it out! Come back for more soon!

Alien Creature... Evolved!

It's been a while since I last updated so here's the latest on the alien creature I've been working on!

It's still not complete as I've only detailed the top right half of it's body and still have to work in details and textures in to the rest of the model! And also pose it into the right position!

It's been really fun working with Zbrush 4r2 on this model! The whole thing was created from a few spheres and the great new insert brushes!

Thanks for looking and hopefully it'll be done real soon!

As usual let me know what you think?!

alien creature

Browsing through a few blogs I ran into this great 2D piece created by Phil Hosking over at http://www.phillhosking.co.uk/

It inspired me to start something off in 3D so using Zbrush I've begun to create the creature on the right! I'm changing a few things as I go on but I really like the general concept!

Still need to add in a few more details like the gas mask and a few pipes and things and then I'm going to begin on the mech suit thing that he sits in!

Credit to Phil Hoskings for the concept!

Thanks for looking! And as always leave some feedback and let me know what you think!? :D

Zbrush 4R2 is...... AMAZING!

So I got to play around with the new Zbrush update today and all I can say is... INCREDIBLE! How much better could this software possibly get? As if it didn't already increase the speed of workflow enough.. They've not only made it MUCH quicker they've also improved.. Well.. So many things! I found it hard to pull myself away from it!

A few months back I started sketching out this little guy...
I decided with the new tools available at my disposal to try and see what I could come up with! Results follow..

A few hours in and I was happy enough to realise the speed of which I could create things! So I left that there and decided to go a little wild...

That took me about an hour and a half.. Seriously.. I can't express how great this program has become!

As for my messed up imagination well... I hope you enjoy it! :p

Defence League - Space Hero - Part 3

Moving steadily on...

So the latest on this little guy is as follows...

As you can see a few little bits added here and there like his ray gun and some initial texturing.. I just wanted to get a sense of colour and how I want him to eventually end up. Got the base pretty much down now! Its time to add in the small touches!

Stay tuned! Boop!

**MINI UPDATE**
Just what I've been messing around with.. Been pretty busy so haven't had much time to work on him! However! Zbrush you cheeky devil you... I JUST found out about the BPR button.. Now I realise I'm probably late with this but OMG! It makes everything look so smooth and nice :) I need to learn more about how it works because I'm probably using it all wrong! Also SUPER excited (nerd) about the update for Zbrush coming out next week! (see link http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=160240

Also... Eyebrows.. Yay or Nay? Maybe a lil thinner I need to play about a bit more! Let me know what you guys think?

Thanks for looking! :D

Defence League - Space Hero - Part 2

So I've almost finished the modelling of this guy.. Need to add a few things details-wise like the arm-cannon and details to the armour etc but so far its starting to actually look like something!

Obvious improvements all over.. The helmet, armour, accessories, boots. But I think once I've finished the textures its going to bring a lot out of the model!

Here's a shot of the face in Zbrush. I was messing around with expressions and thought this one was funny. He looks a bit cocky here though so I'll probably end up changing it!

As always let me know what you think? Anything you think I should change or add? (that I haven't mentioned).

Thanks for looking! :D

Defence League - Space Hero

So I've been working on a new piece.. And not as methodically as I'd have liked but it seems to be working out so far... I'm making a still image composed up of three mini heroes defending something important. I've already thought of everything and how I want the picture to end up looking but I think I'm going to keep that bit a secret and let you watch it unfold!

Here's the first hero out of the three... The Space Hero.

I didn't start off with this sketch. In fact I drew this up last night so it would give me a better direction of where I wanted to go!

I made this quick base mesh to start me off so I could think up of something in Zbrush. I really don't like coming up with proper ideas on the fly but as I'm pretty restraint with times I figured it would be the best way to start things off.

I spent a little time blocking him out and moving bits around but he's definitely heading in the right direction! I've already retopologised the chest armour and the belt and now I'm working away at the boots! I'll then bring everything together in Maya and see how its looking. Watch this space!

**UPDATE**

So I've been working a bit on this lil guy and I've made some progress! He's been retopologised and also UV mapped and separated properly!

Retopolgy (Changing the way the lines flow on the model)

Also started some detail on his inner suit and a little work on the gloves!
